October 20, 2025 — Millions of users across the United States experienced widespread connectivity problems early Monday, as a major outage disrupted Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and several leading online services.
The disruption began around 2 a.m. ET, when Amazon Web Services (AWS) — a global cloud infrastructure provider — faced a major Domain Name System (DNS) failure. The issue temporarily affected dozens of platforms, including Reddit, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Canva, and Coinbase.
AWS said in an early update that “most operations have now returned to normal” but warned that some requests may continue to be throttled while recovery is underway.
The incident caused significant slowdowns across Verizon’s mobile and 5G home internet network, leaving many customers unable to load pages or access streaming services. Similar disruptions were reported by AT&T and T-Mobile subscribers nationwide.
Gamers were also hit by downtime across PlayStation Network, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rocket League, as servers relying on AWS infrastructure struggled to stay online.
Outage tracker Downdetector recorded a sharp surge in reports from U.S. users, indicating a simultaneous failure across multiple internet services. By mid-morning, most affected networks and applications had begun to recover, though intermittent slow speeds persisted in some regions.
Amazon confirmed that its own platforms — Prime Video, Alexa, Amazon Music, and Ring — were also impacted. Engineers said the system backlog may take several hours to fully stabilize.
As of late morning, Verizon and other major U.S. networks appeared to be returning to normal operations, but full restoration could extend through the day.
